GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (GSK), manufacturers of Aquafresh, Biotène, Corsodyl, Poligrip, Sensodyne and Pronamel would like to invite you and your team to attend this year’s Talking Points in Dentistry lecture series.

The evenings are free to attend, and can contribute up to 2½ hours verifiable CPD for the whole dental team. This year’s lectures are:

Mark Hill – "Wear’s the problem in Oral Health Assessments?"
This lecture aims to outline the increasingly important area of oral health assessments (OHAs) and how to use them in practice. The Care Quality Commission requires practices to be able to demonstrate outcomes, showing effective patient assessment, prevention and treatment which ultimately result in an increase in a patient’s overall oral health.

Rates of tooth surface loss are rising and there is a lack of a clear assessment tool that can aid a practice to develop a care pathway for such cases. OHAs can be used to assist practices in identifying, assessing, documenting TSL and ultimately creating their own care pathways for such cases.

Amanda Gallie – Make TALK Your business!
Amanda will guide you through the techniques of motivational interviewing and behavioural change that will captivate and empower your team to excel in the areas of risk assessment, prevention, marketing and compliance.

Do you ever wonder if there is a way to get through to your most unmotivated patients?
Are there aspects of patients’ lifestyles that you would like to help change in order to improve their general and dental health?

In the present climate where speed, efficiency and legislation are king, do you feel disconnected from your patients, their needs and aspirations, and is there information that you need, that is simply not forthcoming?

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a way to bridge the divide and create positive interactions between your team, you the clinician and your patient.

Amanda will take you through the basics of Motivational Interviewing and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). Typical clinical scenarios will be visually created where MI can be introduced, easily applied, and where the whole team can get involved.

This will then unite with Mark's lecture looking at posing strategic questions in relation to tooth surface loss and risk assessment.

Amanda qualified as a Dental hygienist at Manchester University Dental School in 1996 and is a tutor at Kings College Dental Institute. She has a special interest in communication, behavioural change and personal development. She has recently carried out research in nursing assistance for the dental hygienist and dentinal sensitivity and tooth surface loss.
