Now in its 25th year Talking Points in Dentistry has consistently delivered topical and insightful lectures for the whole practice team. This year's lectures are:

"Occlusion In Everyday Practice" - Speaker: Roy Higson
This presentation examines many of the everyday problems we see in clinical practice that may be related to patient’s occlusion.

The presentation will look at how to conduct an occlusal examination, arrive at a provisional diagnosis and formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

As we treat an ageing population, the problems of tooth wear are occurring more often and the lecture will also look at the relationship of tooth surface loss to occlusal factors, and the best approach for these patients.

"Communicating with older persons" - Speaker: Mike Wanless
It can be particularly difficult for the dental team to communicate effectively with people who are older. The number of elderly people we are going to see will increase substantially. Their oral care needs are going to expand dramatically as the large number of baby boomers, who have had complex treatment and have high expectations, age. They provide a definite growth area in dentistry to which we need to respond.

Wouldn’t our life be much easier if we could communicate well with these people who have complex oral and general health needs? This presentation will indicate common oral problems and communication solutions that will make your working life easier and better.

"The Bad Day Stew" - Speaker: John Tiernan
The presentation will look at the ingredients of a bad day / week / month / year in practice. It will examine the reasons why critical events happen and, more importantly, some strategies to help avoid them in the first place. Even when things go badly wrong it is possible to manage situations to retrieve the best from them. The presentation will also look at some of these strategies.

At the end of the presentation participants will:

  • Have an understanding of how emotional intelligence can impact on how we react to certain critical moments in practice.
  • An understanding of why things go wrong.
  • An understanding of some strategies to help you survive the bad days.
